A not-so-surprising confession to anyone who reads this blog with any regularity: I love food. Preparing it, taking photos of it, and of course the actual eating part. My family feels the same way, so this subject figures prominently into our summertime on Cape Cod.
Maybe twice per season we stop into Schoolhouse Ice Cream to pick up a few pints for the freezer.
And I’ve always wanted to try this brand of gelato but couldn’t justify a whole pint for me — luckily my parents were on board to try it too.
My dad grilled salmon on cedar planks, while my mom prepared an excellent lemon herb glaze. It’s the most delicious flaky fish.
Another hit of the summer — my mom made this dish with quinoa, black beans, cilantro, mango, peppers, onions, garlic, and a lime sauce. Just incredible blend of flavors.
Baked white fish, breaded with crackers and I think some sherry:
Nom nom nom…
After attempting to toast marshmallows over the grill, we grew impatient with how long it was taking and moved inside. The stove worked like a charm.
S’mores time! By the way, these are the extra large marshmallows — maybe the size of four regular ones.
We recently discovered Elvis burgers — it sounds a little nuts but just go with me on this. Peanut butter on one side, hot pepper jelly on the other. Sprinkle bacon over the peanut butter side. Add a freshly grilled burger. Enjoy.
Dinner with my aunt and uncle on the patio, with our three cute dogs:
My dad pulls the signature Meyer move — bunny ears — on unsuspecting Bijou.
Three members of the Great White Pack, as we call our fleet of tiny dogs:
…And then we made s’mores again. There is no limit to the number of s’mores one can enjoy during the summer.
A few other nights we went over to my aunt and uncle’s house for homemade meals:
Here is the pizza — it’s the first time they made it on the grill, and it came out great:
Two brothers birding in the backyard:
And now playing cornhole:
Another night we all dined on buffet-style Mexican salads (think Chipotle):
We rarely go out to eat on Cape Cod during the summer because it’s crowded EVERYWHERE on the weekends. But when we do, we hit up our favorite spot Original Seafood in Dennisport. It’s unassuming, order-at-the-counter, and freshly made.
Onions rings and fried clam strips with cole slaw…
One of the more memorable nights this past summer was the evening we got take-out from Original Seafood and brought it to the beach in Dennis.
It was my first time doing this but my family members are pros — they brought along folding tables, beach chairs, and lanterns.
Close-up of my meal — baked haddock with onion rings and cole slaw.
Then we watched a spectacular sunset — the best I’ve seen on the Cape.
We stayed out ’til 9:30 or so, until it was really dark. We intend to star gaze but the clouds were not cooperating. We did enjoy some delicious salted caramel brownies made by my aunt.
And that wraps up all my Cape Cod food photos from summer 2015. Now I’m hungry… off to find more seafood and ice cream!
Fun Fun Fun
Fun indeed!
