Check out this post — Expense Report: Pre-Trip Costs — for a better understanding of other costs associated with a RTW trip, as well as a definition of my travel style and how it impacts my budget.
Here’s what I spent in U.S. dollars over 3 nights / 3 days in Singapore:
- Accommodation = $94.80 … $31.60 per night for 3 nights total
- Food = $66.43 … $22.43 per day
- Coffee = $10.42 … $3.47 per day
- Groceries = $0 … $0 per day
- Activities = $33.97 … $11.32 per day
- Cell & Wifi = $11.85 … $3.95 per day
- Transportation = $16.59 … $5.53 per day
- Miscellaneous = $2.52 … $0.84 per day
And the grand total for 3 nights in Singapore is… :
$236.58 USD, which works out to $78.86 per day.
I know I only spent three days here (compared to 2.5 months in Australia), but it is such a relief to see smaller numbers!
In fact, the daily amount here is actually quite similar to what I spent in Australia and New Zealand. For comparison:
- My daily average spent in Cook Islands: $157.05
- My daily average spent in New Zealand: $88.56
- My daily average spent in Australia: $83.37
- My daily average spent in Singapore: $78.86
At least those numbers are headed in the right direction. Singapore is more expensive to travel than most SE Asian countries — it’s not as backpacker-friendly as, say, Thailand or Bali. But Singapore is impeccably clean, with efficient public transportation, and a very safe place to travel (and there’s lightening-fast Wifi). Those things come at a price. It’s worth it.
A few other notes:
- I used xe.com in mid-August to calculate the exchange rate and at that point in time, 1 Singapore Dollar = .79 USD.
- I received one blog discount on this trip — 20% off at Wink Hostel, which saved me approximately $23.70 USD total (over three nights).
- I did not include my flights in or out of Singapore, since I will note international flights on a separate RTW airfare budget at the end of my trip.
- For under $12 USD, I got a SIM card with M1 which included a week-long data plan. And as always, I used the free Viber app to keep in touch with friends and family back home.
- Thanks to my Charles Schwab debit card, I incurred zero fees for international ATM withdrawals.
I’ll leave you with my favorite twilight shot of the city:
Very thrifty !!
Thank you! It’s a tough city to save money in because prices are kind of high. But I’m pleased that Singapore didn’t set me back more than that!
