In the weeks leading up to the Queen’s birthday (June 10th), an annual lighting installation called VIVID colors the Sydney skyline.
Shapes and images are projected onto famous landmarks in Sydney Harbor like the Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Harbor Bridge.
I happen to arrive the final weekend of the exhibit and venture downtown on Sunday night. While the best way to enjoy this ocular spectacle is from the vantage point of a ferry in Sydney Harbor, the crowds are overwhelming and I barely make it to Circular Quay before turning around.
I return the next and final night of the installation (on Monday, June 10th, the Queen’s actual birthday) and thankfully there are less people. I get onto a ferry and appreciate the projections decorating the harbor.
Enjoy these photos from the magnificent display of lights! Let’s start with the Opera House.
This is the Museum of Contemporary Art:
Here is Sydney’s take on Luna Park; it was only a few short weeks ago that I visited Melbourne’s Luna Park.
And the Harbor Bridge, as seen from our crowded ferry:
Should you find yourself in Sydney in late May / early June, this annual installation is not to be missed!
I’m so jealous. You’re in my absolute favorite city. My best friend lives there and I could move there in a heartbeat (except for the obvious family having to come with me). Take advantage of the amazing seafood and great everything about that city. Hope your checking out the Blue Mountains on your travels too. Enjoy!!!
Hi Julie! I am in love with Sydney too. The Blue Mountains post is coming next week – what a pretty part of the country. I hope you get back here soon, maybe to show your girls around Sydney some day! Hope all is well in LA… I miss seeing movies and anticipate several weeks playing cath-up around the holidays!
