RECAP: Swaziland

My time in Swaziland is brief — only two nights. I’ve shared three posts about this country, all linked below, but I wanted to provide a bit more overview in this post as to how I structured my trip.

ITINERARY PLANNING:

This map shows the areas I visited within the context of the whole country:

Here is a closer look at my route:

This is by no means a comprehensive list of things to do in Swaziland. As the map shows, I visited a fraction of the entire country. But I was very pleased with the parts that I saw over two days / two nights. If I were to go back, I’d look into hiking opportunities in other parts of the country because it’s a mountainous region and the landscape is really beautiful.

DRIVING IN SWAZILAND:

While I was here I drove a rental car (which I picked up and returned in Johannesburg), and it was very easy to drive in Swaziland. Crossing these borders with a vehicle is also very easy. Just be sure to tell your car rental company that you plan to visit Swaziland and they will give you a piece of paper stating you have their permission to take the vehicle over the border (there’s no extra cost for this). FYI, cars drive on the left side of the road, just like they do in South Africa.

CURRENCY IN SWAZILAND:

The currency of Swaziland is called lilangeni — but, just like the currencies of Lesotho and Namibia, it is pegged to the South African rand. Merchants in Swaziland accept payment in South African rand so if you’re here for just a short time then it’s probably easier to just stick with rand.

RECAP OF MY POSTS ON SWAZILAND:

Introduction to Swaziland

My first day in Swaziland is spent watching a song-and-dance performance at the cultural center — it’s really impressive. I’m only here for three days and I already love this small country.

I stop at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Swaziland — they have paths where visitors can meander among animals. It’s idyllic and I spy lots of fun wildlife.

The moment I saw these thatched-roof chalets at the Hawane Resort in Swaziland, I knew I wanted to stay here.
