I’ve already introduced you to the streets of Thamel, the main tourist district in Kathmandu. Today I have more shots of color and celebration, plus a few nighttime images.
These next few photos were taken in early November, just after Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
That’s melted wax on the statues above and below.
Marigold flowers figure prominently into Nepalese celebrations. The are offered as daily prayer rituals, featured in ceremonies like weddings, and given to individuals as a sign of honor or to signify well-wishes.
Here’s other food items for sale on the street adjacent to my guesthouse:
The vibrant color of these powders reminds me of Holi, the Indian festival of love, and iconic images of crowds doused in color.
In Nepal, the colored powder is used for offerings of various size and detail. Some are created in front of homes, others in major areas with lots of traffic. This giant one is in a pedestrian alley in Thamel:
A few more street images…
These last few photos were taken around dusk as I crossed the main road near my guesthouse en route to Thamel. As you can see, there’s heavy traffic and I often have to wait a minute or two for a break in the action before I can even think about crossing. It can be a dangerous road if you’re not careful.
But I take a few moments to capture the buzz one evening, and I love how these shots turned out.
I’ll be back tomorrow with one final post from my time in Thamel / Kathmandu… the FOOD post!
all my life i have wanted to go to Kathmandu, in 2 weeks i will be flying in…..
very excited……
Enjoy your trip there, Thomas! Thanks for reading!
