Welcome to day two of my heli-hike experience at Franz Josef glacier!

This day was so incredible I had to share it over two posts.

As we climb around each wall of ice, we are greeted with new formations and colors; each one is more spectacular than the one before it.

At one point we reach the highest spot we’ll climb today and begin our descent downhill.

This was the best part of the entire Franz Josef experience — climbing down into a huge blue ice cave and adjoining ice tunnel.

That group below is waiting at the helicopter launch area. This place is huge.

I snap this photo with my iPhone. I love how the people look like little ants crawling along this giant sheet of ice.

Once we’re inside the helicopter our guide gives the “all clear” sign to our pilot and we take off.

And that’s it, folks!

I’ll treasure the memories (and photos) of this day for decades to come.

And in case you missed the video yesterday, here is footage from my heli-hike on Franz Josef. It gives an even better impression of the glacier because you can really see what it’s like to walk on this slippery surface and climb up, down, over, and around large formations of ice.
