I drove up to Cape Cod after my time in NYC and was greeted with another dose of Christmas. No complaints here!
That night we enjoyed dinner with longtime family friends Diane and Clay, and their golden retriever Meadow.
Pizza from Box Office Cafe in Chatham, MA. It’s our favorite local pizza joint — and all of their pies are names after movies. They have a fun menu.
Also, notice the Scrabble tile wine charms. I gave them my logophile father many Christmases ago.
Meadow and Bijou! I love playing with dogs.
My mom and Diane were roommates at UConn for all four years, many moons ago. (I’m not saying you’re old! There’s a new moon, like, every month.)
The next day we ventured out into the VERY COLD weather to walk Hardings Beach in Chatham.
Next we headed over to the Chatham fish pier.
My goofy sister thought it’d be fun to throw snowballs at me. Each progressive snowball grew comically larger in size.
I wish I had the words to properly communicate just how FREEZING it was.
We stopped at an overlook above Lighthouse Beach in Chatham. People on the beach below look like little ants against the snowy landscape.
Chatham Light.
Then we ventured to the bay side of the Cape and stopped at Cold Storage Beach in Dennis just as the sun began to set.
I called out for my dad (the driver) to pull over so I could get a photo of this lit Christmas tree. He kindly obliged.
Doesn’t this just scream quintessential New England?
We grabbed dinner at the Jailhouse Tavern in Orleans. It’s become one of my favorite restaurants on the Cape.
I got a spiked peppermint hot chocolate drink that tasted as smooth as it sounds.
May I introduce you to the Veal Orleans — veal medallions in a light batter sauteed with lobster, scallops, mushrooms and scallions in marsala wine and butter. Incredible.
That night we stayed in playing board games. My sister wisely prohibited Cards Against Humanity this time (I put up a good fight to play it but lost). We settled on the classic Masterpiece.
And we made spiced pear martinis. YUM.
That wraps up my time at the Cape. The next day I flew back to Los Angeles, and then it was suddenly 2013… where did the year go?!
Once again, muchas gracias a mis padres for hosting such fun-filled days in Cape Cod. It is a privilege to spend time out there as a family!
