Exploring Perth & Fremantle

This is my LAST post on Australia. Cue the tears! I don’t wanna go.

While I enjoy my five days in Perth, there isn’t too much to see around the city. The best destinations are day trips — to Rottnest, the Pinnacles and surrounding areas, and Fremantle. Today I’ll detail my visit to last of these places.

But first, here’s a few photos from Perth. This public art display downtown reminds me of the ‘slime’ dripping down the Nickelodeon building in Burbank.

The waterfront:

This is the Swan Bells Observation Tower. I don’t pay to go up to the top, but it’s pretty to photograph from below.

Let’s move on to Fremantle!

My Uncle Duane says this is his favorite city in Australia. He relays this to my dad (who then passes it on to me) literally the day before I head there. I love travel coincidences like that.

While Fremantle has many attractive qualities, its architecture tops the list. I am in love with these buildings! I feel like I’ve been transported to the French Quarter of New Orleans, except everyone is speaking in an Aussie accent.

The Pasta Addiction Cafe catches my eye. Sadly they are closed today.

Aww, a reminder of home:

This calls to mind the soapy SNL skits of the same name. Have you seen The Californians?

As if that weren’t enough to trigger flashbacks of Los Angeles, I stumble upon a movie set on the next block. I have no idea what they are shooting, but it involves a man walking down a street with a broken umbrella.

This tunnel leads to a pretty ocean overlook.

And there are multiple used book stores! This makes me happy.

A few more shots around town as I head to the wharf:

Little Creatures restaurant and brewery is the most popular place to eat in Fremantle. It’s HUGE and there are still mobs of people out front waiting for a table.

They have another establishment next door that exudes a circus vibe:

I end my day at the Fremantle Markets, which are teeming with food stalls. It’s only open from Friday through Sunday so I’m lucky to catch the action.

I spot this Coconut Ice and Turkish Delight and pick up one of each.

This hot dog vendor cracks jokes the whole time I wait in line. Very funny dude.

IMG_5772.jpg

And this hot dog is, hands down, the best I’ve ever tasted.

After my late lunch, I write postcards and soak up the atmosphere. Hard to believe this is my last full day in Oz.

IMG_5783.jpg

I pick up a crepe on the way out. Because why not? I order a simply lemon and sugar one, but this crepe makes for a better photo:

I had planned to go right back to Perth, but the light is so pretty along the waterfront that I make a detour.

And, after 2.5 months on this glorious continent, my time is up.

I snap this Instagram photo from the airport departure lounge in Perth. Singapore is next…!

Over the next few days I’ll share my Aussie budget, recap all posts from this destination, and detail a few spots I didn’t get to on this trip.

  1. So glad that it’s been such a good trip, and I loved that I could ‘come along with you’ as you explored it! Also…I still use Kate’s passport cover as well :)

  2. Thank you so much for your absolutely stunning photos and honest and refreshing commentary on your visit to Australia. I’ve always dreamed of going there but probably never will get the chance ( at least in this lifetime). Reading your blog has been the next best thing to going ……to be able to see it through your eyes. Thanks! : )

    • Candice, your comment means so much — thank YOU for following my Australian journey! And I so sincerely hope you get there yourself one of these years. Thank you for reading and commenting!!
