As I hinted in yesterday’s post about the rice fields near Ubud, there is also a monkey forrest in town. I am so jazzed to visit this place!
It’s a giant playground without any sort of barriers so the monkeys have free reign. Vendors sell bananas and other monkey-friendly treats so that tourists can feed them. The entrance is literally a two-minute walk from my accommodation on the main road and I think it costs around $2 to enter.
The entire area is crawling with these adorable primates and I’m only too happy to spend several hours following them with my camera. I spy babies clinging to their mothers, fathers scavenging for food, and tourists getting too close for their own good. The monkeys aren’t shy about snatching a water bottle dangling from a backpack or any other food you may have on you. Zip up all your bags and these guys will leave you alone.
Their expressions are so human-like. It’s captivating to watch them play.
I’ll stop talking writing now and let you enjoy these photos. I’m so pleased with how they turned out — it’s not always easy capturing animals and I shot several hundred images before narrowing it down to these 40+ “good” ones. Here you go!
I watch the big guy on the left below walk up to a water spicket, turn it on, and drink… then walks away without turning it off. That’s a monkey “see-no-evil” on the right below. He’s clearly ignoring the behavior of his water-wasting primate brother.
It’s really neat to see these guys up close in their own environment. They own the place and tourists are just visitors… who occasionally bring bananas. A must-see if you are visiting Ubud!
Beautiful! I love all the carvings with the moss on them. : )
Yes! The moss is so pretty. Love all that greenery!
Can we just talk about evolution? What a great experience!
Yes! It’s so clear where we come from when you look into their eyes!
If all else fails in life, you could always become a monkey photographer! These are amazing!! HAHA I love the one of the monkey upside down laughing. So cute!
Monkeys are so much fun to photograph. They are precocious little creatures!
