I hardly expect our next stop on Kangaroo Island (“G” on the map below) to upstage the Remarkable Rocks, but that’s exactly what happened.
Our guide drops us off at a look-out point and instructs us to follow a bush path towards the lighthouse in the distance. He’ll meet us there with the van and then we’ll continue trekking towards a natural land bridge and seal colony.
The path below winds along a scenic stretch of coastline towards the seal colony.
I spy with my little eye… a kangaroo chilling in the tall grass.
The waves are ferocious.
Almost there…
Here’s the land bridge:
And these are New Zealand fur seals. Don’t bother telling them they’re in the wrong country; I tried and they wouldn’t listen.
As we walk back towards the van, we notice a huge splash near the horizon. There’s something big out there.
My zoom lens isn’t all that powerful (it only extends to 105mm) but I capture the following image and enlarge it to reveal… a whale!
Pretty spectacular, right? I’m fascinated by these ginormous and gentle creatures. Our guide tells us we’re lucky to have spotted one.
And then our luck takes on physical form in this rainbow! That whale is out near the pot of gold on the left.
Our lucky rainbow is ready for its close up:
A whale sighting and a rainbow… not a bad way to wrap up our bush walk.
Next up on the agenda: surfing the nearby sand dunes.

I spied with my eyes 2 kangaroos chillin in the tall grass! Great pictures!
Thank you Diane! Between the kangaroos, seals, whales, and rainbow, that was a special spot!!
Whales and rainbows! The land down under truly is a magical place!
I felt lucky to see both… but the whale especially. When we saw that tail flip up on the horizon we all got so excited… “Did you see that?” “Is that what I think it is?!”
Erica, I LOVE your blog! I’m slightly behind as you can tell, but I’m just tearing through it. I loved this post with the rainbow and whale and huge waves! Also, I was thinking about the construction team that built that walkway – WOW! How did they do it? I love that you are having so much fun!
Molly, it means so much to me that you’re catching up on my blog!! And that you love it! Visiting all these places has been even better than I could have imagined, but it means even more to share it with people in my life. So thanks for following along! Yes, this day on Kangaroo Island was incredible — I didn’t even think about that walkway. It’s a long way from the main land. Good observation!!
