Exploring Osaka: An Introduction to Japan
Upon arriving in Japan, I’m fascinated by just how similar our cultures are. I’m immediately charmed by this country and Osaka is the perfect introduction city.
The Captivating Creatures of the Osaka Aquarium
I am spellbound by the marine life on display at the Osaka Aquarium, one of the largest in the world.
Jellyfish and Whale Sharks in Japan
There’s an entire floor dedicated to jellyfish at the Osaka Aquarium. And a giant tank with TWO whale sharks. I can’t put my camera down.
I fall in love with Kyoto swiftly and deeply — the kind people, the efficient metro system, the charming alleyways. Here’s a broad look at my new favorite city.
The Japanese Cuisine Triumvirate: Sushi, Ramen, Dumplings
Food is a big reason I love Japan. I pretty much rotate my meals between sushi, ramen, and dumplings.
While my night begins searching for elusive Geishas, I find something better: enchanting alleyways and winding rivers in the heart of Gion.
Thousands of bright saffron gates line the pathways at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. What a delight to photograph!
One of my favorite memories from Japan is the afternoon I spent wearing traditional kimono with my friend Ayumi.
Kiyomizu-dera: The Most Iconic Temple in Japan
This UNESCO site is my favorite spot in Kyoto and I return three times during my stay. I’ve accumulated the best photos in this post.
There are dozens of temples and shrines in Kyoto. Here are a few of my favorites, including the highlight of them all — the Golden Temple, photographed at sunset.
Japan’s Enchanting Bamboo Forest
Arashiyama is a day trip from Kyoto, and it’s my single favorite place in all of Japan. This bamboo forest is a big reason why.
There are an exhausting number of temples in Arashiyama and I do my best to see the highlights. Tenryu-ji is the clear favorite.
The Many Faces of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji
Hundreds of statues with the most curious faces line this shrine in Arashiyama — a village of stone, moss-covered men and women.
Deer wander the streets of Nara like stray puppies — I’ve never seen anything like it. And Nara is home to some of the prettiest temples in Japan.
Food Tasting at Nishiki Market
Fresh sushi on a stick? Don’t mind if I do! I sample treats (and avoid a few gross items… fish eyes, anyone?) while exploring Nishiki Market in Kyoto.
Vegetarians beware: meat ahead. I order some of the world’s best beef in Kobe, Japan.
If you consider a late-night rooftop picnic and sunrise fish market wild. Just go with me on this one.
The Busiest Intersection in the World
Hundreds of pedestrians cross this intersection every time the traffic lights change in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo.
Standing at over 2,000 feet, the Tokyo Skytree is the tallest building in Japan and the second tallest in the world. I head to the top for unparalleled views of this city at sunset.
From lively public spaces to high end fashion and tasty treats, these are my favorite moments in Japan’s capital city.
Japan is by no means a cheap place to visit, but it’s probably my favorite country in Asia. Check out how much I spent per day during my two weeks here.
