This week I am thrilled to share photos from my two-day excursion to Kangaroo Island with Groovy Grape Getaways.
I first heard about this destination from Tom, one of our stage managers at Young & Restless. He and his wife visited the island years ago, staying overnight in a rustic hut; in the morning they were delighted to wake up to dozens of kangaroos surrounding the property. After hearing that story I didn’t need any more arm twisting — Kangaroo Island earned a spot on my “must see” list.
After an early morning pick-up in Adelaide, our group of ten departs for the island via a ferry ride out of Cape Jervis. Upon arrival in Kangaroo Island (the town of Penneshaw — “A” on the map below), we hop into the Groovy Grape van for Cape Gantheaume Wilderness on the southern coast (“B” on the map below).
After a delicious BBQ lunch we walk down to the moody ocean:
We stop next door at Seal Bay Conservation Park and pause at the visitor’s center to check out their wildlife exhibit before heading to the shore.
It’s still cloudy and windy as we make our way down to the sea lions, but rough weather only enhances the natural beauty of this place. Bright green foliage and aqua water stand out even more against the neutral sky.
The bones of an unlucky, beached whale are laid out in the sand for visitors to see. It’s hard to tell the size of the bones in this photo, but this skeleton is an imposing size.
As we wander along the viewing platform, Australian sea lions scamper in the sand below.
I love this pose.
A wildlife guide leads the tour and provides details about the sea lions’ environment, feeding, and life cycles.
Aww, they’re kissing…
… and now they’re fighting. Something went very wrong in a matter of seconds.
Tomorrow I’ll share our tour of nearby Kelly Cave, a perfect rainy day activity on Kangaroo Island.
