The Arts Factory Lodge in Byron Bay is, hands down, the most interesting hostel I’ve stayed at in all my travels.
They have an on-site brewery…
And a cinema just around the corner…
There’s daily workshops for activities like yoga, jewelry making, and African drumming, plus a regular shuttle into town in case you don’t feel like making the 15 minute walk…
There are pool tables and a travel desk for discounts on local activities…
A food and smoothie bar to whip up cheap, organic meals…
… like the Stoner Surprise…
In short, the Arts Factory is a hippy haven. You’ve probably figured that out by now.
And Byron Bay, located in the center of Australia’s east coast, is a surfing mecca — as the boards hanging above reception suggest.
Below right is one of many cheap and healthy meals I ate over four days here — chili con carne with rice for about $6.
And there is a pool!
I don’t go for a swim as it rains most of the days I’m here, but it sure is pretty to look at from the second floor kitchen and dining area.
At the beginning of my stay I purchase a few grocery staples like raisin bran, OJ, bananas, and soy milk. This is my breakfast each day as I edit photos and write blog posts:
And there’s the option to stay in teepees on the property! I select a 4-bed dorm room, which works out fine, but isn’t nearly as exciting as a teepee. I don’t run into anyone staying in teepees but I’d be curious to hear what it’s like. I imagine it might not be pleasant with all the rain this particular week.
The property is situated around a little pond.
I attend two morning yoga classes during my time here. The classes are by donation, which is perfect for travelers on a budget. Yoga classes in town cost about $15 each.
And this is the library / quiet room.
I am in love with this floor-to-ceiling map!
Here’s the dorm room I stay in — basic and on the small side, but it does the trick for a few nights.
One night I walk over to the cinema and catch A Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper (who share exactly zero scenes in the movie). The highest complement I can pay it is that I’ve never seen this type of movie before. It boasts quite an original plot line.
And the seats are so comfy — I sprawl out and relax. Very enjoyable.
If you find yourself in beautiful Byron Bay (photos coming tomorrow), the Arts Factory Lodge is a very fun place to stay.
And I meet two new friends here — shout out to Tushar and Alex from Melbourne!

Hi Peggy! I’m so glad you like the post. I had a great time at the Arts Factory and appreciate what a unique property it is! I’ve since left Australia, but I appreciate your generosity — thanks for the offer, and the travel wishes, and I hope to return someday! XX
