At 2,165 feet in length, Tolaga Bay Wharf is the longest pier in New Zealand.
When I first heard about this stop on our Stray bus tour, I figured I’d get out and take a few photos. But this place is impressive — killer waves, dramatic cliffs, and a long stretch of boardwalk that allows you the perspective to see just how stunning this area truly is.
The wave action here is ferocious and a big draw for surfers.
On hot days the Stray bus passengers often jump off the pier to cool down, but this part of the country is steeped in fall and there’s a chill in the air.
That doesn’t hold back our bis driver, Tim, who goes for a quick spin on his surf board.
When there’s a big wave that the surfers want to avoid, they lean down onto the boards and stick their butts in the air as the wave crashes over them.
Our bus crew enjoys watching Tim from the warmth of the pier.
For a 30 minute stop, I am impressed by this place. Well worth checking out if you are circling the East Cape of New Zealand!
